An Unmatched Approach : How a Tailored Approach Helped Laurel Get Out of Pain, and Stay Out of Pain!
Laurel came to CMS with a variety of serious pains in both her upper & lower body. What started as a single pain at her right side glute a few years ago had multiplied across her body.
The accumulated effect had begun to rob her of doing the things she loved (gardening, tennis & pilates).
She was experiencing pain in her right leg from her glute running down into the hamstring, calf and heel; she also complained of stiffness in her left hip, pain in her right shoulder, constant neck pain and tingling sensations in both feet .
She was spending so much of her time doing a laundry list of things just to get by on a daily basis. She was taking painkillers daily, while getting regular messages, taking salt baths, doing light therapy, rolling, stretching, and doing the exercises prescribed by her physical therapist.
Relief was temporary and the pain would always resurface, each time returning with a greater and greater loss of mobility and strength. It got to the point where it was difficult for her to get out of bed, not to mention how hard it had become to get some sleep.
She came to CMS via a recommendation from her pilates instructor, desperately looking for a fresh approach. From the first session, she knew that she had found it from the attention to detail and care put into her case. She put away the notion of surgery and started believing that there was a real chance that the cycle of pain and restriction could finally be broken.
After diligently reviewing her history, Scott started to put the story together and extract some key points of evidence. He added on a personalized assessment of her body position, range of motion, strength at various points, and neurologic testing for control. He was then able to overlap this data with her history to locate even more specific areas to investigate. This analysis led to further testing for weaknesses and restrictions that could then be resolved with a specific exercise to retrain the muscles and make improvements right away.
As Scott worked through the intricate web of her dysfunction, the root causes became evident - various injuries from her past had had a crossover effect on her movement system that were so deeply engrained that they created an intense guarding of her right hip muscles after a minor strain.
What would have been a minor problem got mixed into a jumble of compensations already present and prevented the muscles of the hip from doing their assigned jobs of creating stability and controlling motion. It all came together and led to her state of chronic pain and immobility.
With weekly sessions, he went about putting the pieces back together, locating each weak link in her system one-by-one and restoring strength with hyper-specific exercise. He was able to rebuild her foundation of strength in a balanced manner, and address balance & coordination problems to be able to move with less effort and pain.
From even early on in the process, Laurel loved that Scott neither required her to stop her activities which she enjoys, nor did he require her time consuming regimes to add to her list of burdens. As an avid gardener, tennis and pickleball player, she feared losing these parts of her life. But he allowed her to continue in ways that did not impede progress. She appreciated that he met her where she was at.
She is grateful to have been spared what would've been an unnecessary surgery with a hard recovery for no real gain, and worse, no less pain.
With the continued support of Corrective Muscle Solutions, she has continued to enjoy her love of tennis, while staying fit and maintaining her active lifestyle.
And, she has no plans to stop, as she says that “every session unlocks a new level of mind-boggling control over the inner workings of [her] own body.”
